Viewing a Transcript

When you open an asset in the Transcript tab, you see the transcript selected in the transcript selection control. You can view and edit the transcript. See the following topics:

In some cases, you will see the following instead of the transcript.

Reason/Action

“Your system is not licensed for this feature”

The STT feature pack is installed but the required license for using the Transcribe features is not activated. Contact your system administrator for assistance.

“Asset is not supported”

Open a supported asset type. Currently only Production Management master clips are supported.

"There is no transcript yet"

Consider triggering the transcript creation. See Creating a Transcript

"Transcription in progress"

Wait until the transcription job is completed. The Transcript tab is not automatically updated during transcript creation for non-growing clips that are shorter than 1 hour. Click the Reload button in the Transcript tab to show the created transcript.

For growing (EWC) clips and or non-growing clips that are longer than 1 hour, the "Transcription in progress" message is replaced as soon as the first portion of the transcript is created.

You can monitor the job progress in the Process app. See Monitoring Transcribe Jobs in the Process App.

For transcription jobs submitted by you, you will receive a notification once the job is completed. Prerequisite: Sending notification has been enabled for the Process app in the User Settings > Notifications section. See Using Process App Notifications.

"Transcription failed"

Check the error message of the failed job in the Process app. For transcription jobs submitted by you, you will receive a notification once a job failed (if sending notifications is enabled).

"Transcription creation completed"

This message is only shown when the transcript creation for a growing (EWC) clip or a non-growing clip that is longer than 1 hour is finished. It is not displayed within in the Transcript tab but on the right side of the Fast bar and disappears after a short period of time. The message is not shown for non-growing clips that are shorter than 1 hour.

Click the Reload button in the Transcript tab to enable editing of the transcript.

<empty grid>

Instead of the transcript, the Transcript tab shows only an empty grid (means: only the Speaker and Transcript column headers) in the following cases:

  • The audio track for which the transcript has been created does not contain spoken words.

  • When the transcript is created for an EWC clip or a non-growing clip that is longer than 1 hour, the empty grid is shown for a short period of time before the first portions of the transcript are displayed.

Accessing the Transcript of an Asset

Accessing a transcript is a pretty basic operation, as described in the following procedure.

To access the transcript of an asset:

  1. Use the Browse app, Search app, or other method to load an asset into the Asset Editor.

  2. Click the Asset Editor’s Transcript tab.

If the Transcript tab is not shown, click the chevron on the right-side of the Tabs area to move the list of tab names and thus show the Transcript tab.

If the Transcript tab still is not shown, it might be hidden: Click the Tab menu button, hover your cursor over the Show/Hide Tabs option and select (enable) the Transcript check box. For more information, see Asset Editor Tabs.

Once the Transcript tab is shown in the Tabs area, click on Transcript.

If there is a transcript available at least for one audio track, the Transcript tab shows the first transcript selected in the transcript selection control.

Navigating within the Transcript

When you play back a master clip in the Asset Editor's Media Viewer or position the playhead in the Asset Editor's timeline, text in the Transcript tab will closely follow the spoken word in the master clip.

Note the following when navigating the transcript:

  • If the Sync Playhead toggle button is selected (blue button, default), during playback in the Asset Editor's Media Viewer or when you position the playhead in the timeline, the corresponding word is highlighted in green in the Transcript tab.

Vice versa, when you select a section in the Transcript tab, the playhead in the Asset Editor's Media Viewer is positioned to the corresponding timecode.

  • If the Sync Playhead toggle button is deselected (gray), during playback in the Asset Editor's Media Viewer, corresponding words are not highlighted in the Transcript tab. Selecting a section in the Transcript area does not move the playhead in the Asset Editor's Media Viewer.

  • When you edit the transcript text, Sync Playhead is ignored.

To navigate the transcript:

  1. Open an asset in the Asset Editor.

  2. Open the Transcript tab.

  3. (optional) Click the Orientation menu in the Asset Editor toolbar and select the dual column view.

  4. Select the transcript which you want to view from the transcript selection control.

  5. To navigate with enabled synchronization:

    1. (if inactive) Activate the Sync Playhead button.

    2. Start playback or move the playhead in the timeline.

      • The currently spoken word is highlighted in green in the Transcript tab, its segment is highlighted in gray. While playback continues, playhead and highlighting update in tandem, the Transcript tab scrolls down the list of transcript segments.

      • When the position is between two words, the left word in the Transcript tab is highlighted.

      • When two words share the same timecode, both words are highlighted in green in the Transcript tab.

      • When the position is between two segments (gap), the left segment is highlighted in the Transcript tab.

    3. Click on a segment in the Transcript tab.

The first word is highlighted in green and the playhead is moved to the corresponding timecode in the timeline.

    4. Click on a word in the Transcript tab.

The word is highlighted in light green and the playhead is moved to the corresponding timecode in the timeline.

  6. To navigate with disabled synchronization

    1. Deactivate the Sync Playhead button so it turns gray.

    2. Start playback or move the playhead in the timeline.

Neither words nor segments are highlighted in the Transcript tab.

    3. Click on a segment or word in the Transcript tab.

Neither the video in the Asset Editor nor the playhead in the timeline is updated.

Searching in the Transcript

If a transcript includes a large number of segments, use the word filter to search for words in the transcript.

Using the word navigation controls you can skip through the found words; if Sync Playhead is enabled, skipping through the found words also moves the playhead. See Navigating within the Transcript.

Note that the search is only applied to the text in the Transcript column.

To search in the transcript:

  1. Select the transcript which you want to view from the transcript selection control.

  2. Click in the "Find" word filter field and type the word you want for search for.

Since a "contains" search will be applied you do not need to type the entire word. Searching for multiple words is not supported.

  3. Press Enter.

All words in the transcript that contain your search term are highlighted in blue. The transcript scrolls down to the segment with the first matching word, and selects the word.

    • If Sync Playhead is enabled, the word is highlighted in green. In this case, also the playhead is moved to the corresponding position in the timeline.

    • If Sync Playhead is disabled, the word in still highlighted in blue. In this case, the playhead is not moved in the timeline.

The word count to the right side of the word filter shows the number of matching words in the form <selected word>/<total number of found words>.

  4. Navigate through the matching words in the transcript text by clicking the Previous or Next button.

For the first hit, the Previous button is disabled; when you reach the last hit, the Next button is disabled.

  5. To remove your search term, click the X button in the word filter and press Enter.
